Though this first attempt will be far from perfect, I’d like to flesh out the idea that not all finishing is created equal, and nor should it be. Read MoreFortunate for all of us, this year’s release at Geneva Watch Days is another stellar example to add to MB&F’s catalog – the Legacy Machine Split Escapement EVO. Released (very quietly) earlier this year in a limited 10 piece run to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the UAE, this is the Split Escapement EVO’s first global release in icy-cool light blue dial plate and gray subdials.
Read MoreAfter a tumultuous last few years, there isn’t much better than the watch industry hosting in-person events. It’s a breath of fresh air to see faces, old and new, in the watch industry and community. Independent brands had yet another strong showing – bringing their creativity and craftsmanship to the forefront of horology. As we do every year, we want to cast a spotlight on some of our favorites.
Read MoreI wanted to pursue a similar line of thought in navigating how culture impacts watchmaking. More precisely, what makes German watches German and where is German watchmaking headed? Fortunately, Esperluxe friends Christine Hutter at Moritz Grossmann as well as Ev and Stefan Kudoke from their eponymous brand lended a hand. As independent watchmakers and brands in Glashütte, the seat of historical and contemporary German watchmaking, both helped shed light on what the key characteristics are of German watchmaking and its future.
It’s one thing to produce something that has this affect on someone one time, or even a few times. In the case of MB&F, “Max Büsser and Friends” have beat the drums of creativity across 13 Horological Machines, 9 Legacy Machines, and a slew of other marvelous co-creations with fellow brands like H. Moser & Cie and Bvlgari.

Read MoreOn the surface, many readers will already be somewhat familiar with Rexhep's story. As a Kosovar-Albanian, he came to Switzerland at the young age of 12 and went directly into a watchmaking apprenticeship at Patek Philippe. Read MoreEvery beginning is improbable, the result of chaotic circumstances coming together at the right moment and time. In the case of Svend Andersen and his long, illustrious journey as an independent watchmaker, some spirited New Year's celebrations in his youth put the young watchmaker on the map.

Under the impetus of designer and URWERK co-founder Martin Frei, the model has undergone subtle changes in materials, colours, finishes and aesthetic characteristics. Against a predominantly black carbon backdrop, the UR-220 revisits a fascinating play on contrasts and luminosity.
Read MoreThe long and short is, NFT’s could be spectacular for the watch industry and watch community, but to get there, the industry will have to retool how it thinks about the technology and its value. More than anything with this article, I want to push the industry to think more creatively about what types of NFT’s might create hits in the watch community. Before we get into that, let’s just cover the basics.
Read MoreIn 2021, the LM101 series evolves with technically and aesthetically-upgraded versions distinguished by colourful dial plates, including a stainless steel version. Focusing further on the essentials, the bezel and “Legacy Machine” engraving on the dial withdraw to highlight the time and power reserve, indicated on slightly larger subdials; and the star of the show, the signature “flying” balance wheel, inherits a double hairspring.
Read MoreThe 47mm black DLC titanium case with openworked edges houses one of the most complex automatic skeletonized movements in the world. In the U30, nothing has been sacrificed in the expression of Angelus’ extreme watchmaking approach.
Read MoreWhen we started working on this article, the initial intention was to write about the origins and motivations behind the creation of AHCI, the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants. What we didn’t expect to learn though; the origins of AHCI are directly connected to how modern luxury watchmaking came to be defined by high complications in the fallout of the Quartz Crisis. The story of the evolution, or revolution, in fine watchmaking revolves round independent watchmakers.

Read MoreInnovation is often understood very abstractly in watchmaking. It's loosely synonymous with "new" and "different," and generally coupled to materials, complications, and design.
And there's really only one way to do this: speak directly with the masters of the domain. In this case, we spoke with Jean-François Mojon, founder of the complications and innovation workshop, Chronode SA, and Technical Director of Cyrus Genève.
