Urwerk UR-112 Aggregat Bicolore Edition
Urwerk UR-112 Aggregat Bicolore Edition
Our Take
When Urwerk retired the UR-105 Series earlier in the year, we knew that something new was on the horizon. Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait too long. Introducing the UR-112 Aggregat!
Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner, co-founders of Urwerk, are both enthralled by the idea of evolution. Each Urwerk timepiece has a clear lineage from their historical creations. Each new release retains genetic code from the past while adding something new for the present and future. Masters of balance between tradition and innovation, the duo continuously finds exciting ways to stay true to the brand’s “vibe” without ever falling into cookie-cutter repetition. The UR-112 is yet another testament to this truth.
Drawing its lineage back to the UR-CC1 and UR-111C, there are clear elements that have been retained in the UR-112 – the digital jumping hour indicator, a shared profile of the case. There’s clear connections to the retired UR-105 CT with the hinged titanium protective cover, albeit with a new opening/closing mechanism. It makes sense that Urwerk went with “Aggregat” as this timepiece ties together so many of the design and watchmaking themes across different models and series.
What’s new here is an entirely novel caliber from Urwerk with a central shaft transitioning power from power source though 8 planetary gears to twin carousels displaying the hours and minutes. It’s also the first timepiece where time-telling precision, minute to minute, has been freed by jumping five minute increments. We can see the Urwerk team pushing the boundaries of their own engineering capabilities. The digital seconds on top and jumping hour and rotating minute on the opposite extreme of the case are all powered by a single source of energy. Each display receives exactly what it needs to operate optimally with no energy wasted. As we expect from Urwerk, this is the pinnacle of creative watchmaking with tight mechanical tolerances.
Limited to 25 pieces, this first UR-112 sends a strong message for what is to come from Urwerk.
