Our Take
Over the years, we’ve been fortunate enough to handle many different Urwerk timepieces. We love how Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei, Urwerk co-founders, leverage their extraordinary partnership to create extraordinary timepieces. That’s why we’re excited to showcase yet another marvel from the brand: the UR-105 TTH “Tantalum Hull.”
Released recently (May 2021), this timepiece is the final edition of the iconic UR-105 series after a 7-year production run. And it’s going out in style. Using a combination of titanium and tantalum for the timepiece’s case, there is probably no material that has stronger Urwerk “vibes” than tantalum. A matte, blue-ish-gray-ish material, it fits the futuristic aesthetic of the brand exceptionally well. Even when the material posed significant production challenges for the watchmakers. As Martin commented, “we made an UR-110 out of tantalum a few years ago – a first that almost was the last. The team made me promise never to use it again because tantalum ‘eats’ our CNC machines’ bits. It destroys them, reducing their life by a factor of three. But I love its blue-gray luster. Pure magic!”
Limited to only 12 pieces, the UR-105 TTH wears extremely comfortably for a timepiece with heft (39.5mm width x 53mm length x 17.8mm height). And it bears one of Urwerk’s emblems, caliber UR 5.03’s convertible winding system. Powered by two turbines to regulate the movement’s automatic winding system, a lever on the caseback allows you to deactivate the automatic rotors, converting the timepiece into a manual wind watch.
Overall, this is a hell of a send-off for the UR-105 series. And with every goodbye comes something new as well. Like everyone else in the watch community, we can’t wait to see what’s next for Urwerk.
